In the fifth inning, as always, the groundskeepers came out to sweep the infield and danced their ridiculous dance to “YMCA.” There they were, a bunch of paunchy, middle-aged, married lawn guys prancing around to a song that, apparently unbeknownst to them, was the most famous gay pride disco theme in the history of popular music.

“Why is Derek Jeter ignoring the dancing men?” my son asked.

“Because they’re a cultural nonsequitur,” I said.

“Huh?” replied my poor, bewildered son.

“DJ’s just concentrating on the game,” I said.

The unstoppable march of the American pop culture Zeitgeist is in charge.
